Hooves, Heart, and Holiday Cheer: Snowman's Reindeer Farm Brings Christmas Magic to Life
December 2024 SBS - Hannah Chatterton
BodyOutside of Canton, Snowman's Reindeer Farm is a delightful labor of love operated by Jason and Dawn Parsons, its new stewards. Since taking over from founders Scott and Tracy Snowman, the Parsons have balanced the demands of running a reindeer farm with preserving a place that, for many local families, has become synonymous with winter magic.
"Taking on Snowman's Reindeer Farm has been an incredible journey for us," Mr. Parsons shared in an interview. "It's brought more joy, challenges, and surprises than we could have ever imagined."
The farm is home to a small herd of reindeer, each animal possessing its own endearing quirks. Among the crowd favorites are Jack Frost, a reindeer known for his gentle demeanor, and Holly, whose spirited personality delights visitors. In their new roles, the Parsons have immersed themselves in the complexities of reindeer care, quickly learning that reindeer possess much personality—and an ability to surprise their handlers on any given day.
When they took over Snowman's Reindeer Farm, the Parsons knew they were inheriting a beloved piece of the community's seasonal tradition, a status cultivated by the original owners. "We meet with [Scott and Tracy] weekly," said Jason Parsons. "They've become our mentors, sharing stories and helping us understand the special details that make this place what it is. Their love for the farm inspires us daily, and their guidance has been invaluable as we take on new projects."
To maintain the farm's cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, the Parsons have introduced new elements to enhance visitors' experiences while preserving many beloved traditions. From Santa Claus visits to the Flying Reindeer Snack Bar, the farm is designed to bring out the holiday spirit in all who visit. Small children can take a ride on a charming kiddie train, while guests of all ages can sip hot cocoa and stroll through themed photo spots ideal for holiday keepsakes.
In addition to their reindeer, the farm's "Fluffy Butt Hut" is an entertaining attraction. Home to the farm's Silkie chickens, the hut gives guests a chance to meet these famously soft, fluffy creatures. All told, the farm operates with a team of thirty-two employees, from young chicken wranglers to retirees, each member brings a unique warmth to the work. "Everyone pitches in with a sense of holiday cheer and commitment to making each visit special," Mr. Parsons said, adding that their children—Mady, Logan, Carter, and Jaycee—are frequent helpers as well, lending an extra layer of familial care to the farm's operations.
This coming year, the farm will undergo new developments thanks to an economic grant awarded by Fulton county, intended to boost local tourism. The farm plans to open a guest lodge called the Reindeer Retreat, where visitors can stay overnight, immersing themselves in the farm's reindeer magic beyond the usual day trip. Further upgrades, including additional exhibits and visitor facilities, are planned for completion by spring of 2025.
To preserve the peaceful experience for the reindeer and the guests alike, the farm operates by reservation only, allowing for staggered entry times. Reservations can be made on the farm's website, and once admitted, visitors are encouraged to take their time, whether wandering through the barns, chatting with staff, or simply observing the reindeer from a close—but respectful—distance.
In this quiet corner of Forgottonia, the Parsons are maintaining a winter wonderland that has captivated generations and created countless family memories. As Mr. Parsons said, "We can't wait to welcome you to Snowman's Reindeer Farm this season." For those seeking the nostalgic essence of the holidays, that invitation might just be one worth accepting.
