Paint, Pottery, and Paws at The Crafty Coop
November 2024 Small Business Spotlight -Hannah Chatterton
Founded by Laci Todd, The Crafty Coop invites people of all ages to unleash their artistic potential by painting pottery, mugs, bowls, or quirky figurines while enjoying the company of family and friends.
Laci's journey into the world of pottery began long ago, sparked by joyful memories of painting pottery with her grandmother; Laci continues this tradition with her husband and kids. One day, while painting at another studio with her family, her husband recalls that she looked around and said, "I want to do this someday; I'm going to open up my own Paint-Your-Own-Pottery Studio." In 2018, Laci seized the opportunity to participate in the Macomb Downtown Development Pitch Competition, not expecting much beyond the experience. To her surprise, she clinched third place, receiving a wave of positive feedback that inspired her to pursue her dream. Just a few months later, The Crafty Coop opened its doors, and on October 20th of this year, Laci celebrated six years of bringing art to the community!
The name itself reflects Laci's passions—her love for chickens and all things crafty, a clever twist her husband helped her devise. Since opening, Laci has embraced community engagement wholeheartedly, actively participating in local events to raise awareness about her studio. "If there is a table event I can attend to help get my business more 'out there,' I do my best to make it happen," she says. From showcasing her beloved ducks, chickens, and geese at community events to giving away popsicles during the Heritage Day Parade, Laci's enthusiasm for community involvement is so evident.
The Crafty Coop also fosters cats and kittens from the McDonough County Animal Shelter, creating a nurturing environment for both the animals and customers. "We've had 14 cats adopted since we started fostering," and most have all been adopted by customers.
Laci is passionate about giving back, whether through sponsoring local sports teams or collaborating with other businesses for events. Such as her recent work with Forgottonia Brewing for an Oktoberfest beer stein painting event or the "Paint & Sip" party with Starbucks to celebrate all things Fall with pumpkin and witch's cauldron mugs to paint while sipping on fall-flavored drinks.
As a woman-owned business, Laci has valuable advice for aspiring female entrepreneurs: "You can do anything, but not everything! Learn how to delegate and prioritize." She emphasizes the importance of mental health and balancing family commitments while chasing dreams. "Keep chipping away at your goals. Do it scared, anxious, unsure—just do it!"
With the holiday season approaching, The Crafty Coop will offer a variety of special promotions and events, including a Painting with Santa event, kids' nights out, and their popular Mystery Ornament To Go boxes. Gift certificates are also available, perfect for those seeking unique, personal presents.
At The Crafty Coop, creating art and lasting memories go hand in hand. Seasoned artists and curious beginners alike are welcome at the Crafty Coop. This holiday season, think about giving your loved ones an experience or a day spent together rather than just one thing. Laci says it best– "Creating together, putting devices down and spending quality time are ultimately the greatest gifts PLUS you get a cool piece of art to remember it forever! Create masterpieces and memories at The Crafty Coop!"
