Calling All Artists: GALEX Entries Close January 18

By: Forgottonia Times™ Report

For more than half a century, the Galesburg Community Arts Center has hosted GALEX, a juried exhibition that unites artists from across the nation. Coming into its 58th year, the exhibition continues to build on its legacy, showcasing the finest in contemporary art and offering awards for outstanding contributions.

GALEX, an amalgamation of "Galesburg" and "Exhibition," began as a regional showcase but has grown into a national competition. Open to artists working in all mediums, the event invites creators to submit up to three original works completed within the last three years. This year's juror, Niels Lewis, will select over 70 pieces for inclusion and award more than $2,500 in prizes.

Mr. Lewis, a longtime supporter of the Galesburg Community Arts Center, brings a unique perspective as a collector and advocate for the arts. His years of dedication to the Center, including leadership roles during pivotal moments like the acquisition of its new facility, imbue him with deep insight into its mission. "GALEX … welcomes all artists of diverse backgrounds and expertise," he said. "I am looking for unique pieces that inspire awe and wonder, and that have a strong aesthetic sensibility."

Among the awards are the $1,000 Blick Art Materials Purchase Award, the Lonnie Eugene Stewart Award of Excellence ($600), and other honors recognizing fine printmaking and sculpture.

The entry deadline closes at 11:59 on January 18, 2024, and artwork is due February 13-15. Eligible works will be on view from February 28 through April 5, 2025. New this year, the exhibition will include the inaugural GALEX Gala, a formal fundraiser celebrating the arts. Held on March 1, this ticketed event will feature a special auction of selected works, offering artists the chance to connect with collectors in a dynamic setting.

The Galesburg Community Arts Center, open Wednesday through Saturday, welcomes inquiries about the event and submission process. For more information, visit GALEX's website at https://www.galesburgarts.org/galex or contact exhibition@galesburgarts.org or call the Center directly at (309) 342-7415.

As GALEX prepares to spotlight some of the nation's finest talent, Galesburg cements its role as a cornerstone of artistic celebration and innovation.
