Western Illinois Museum Receives $130,000 Grant for Renovations

The Western Illinois Museum, an anchor of local history and culture, has been awarded a $130,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s (DCEO) Tourism Attractions Grant Program. The funds, part of a statewide effort to bolster tourism and support local attractions, will fuel ongoing renovations to the Museum’s historic downtown building.

The latest infusion of funding will underwrite the installation of a modern heating and cooling system in a section of the building originally constructed in 1941 as an automobile garage. This upgrade, critical to making the space fully accessible and usable year-round, represents a milestone in a multi-year effort to restore and reimagine the facility.

Adding HVAC will enable the museum to preserve their collection more effectively and welcome visitors in comfort, regardless of the season. The renovation is part of a larger vision to breathe new life into a storied building while enhancing its role as a hub of cultural and educational activity.

Over the past three years, the Museum has invested heavily in infrastructure improvements. Tuckpointing the brick exterior, replacing outdated windows with energy-efficient replicas, and installing a new ADA-compliant floor with inlaid electrical service have fortified the building’s structure while maintaining its historic charm. These efforts were made possible by a combination of grants, including an earlier $24,000 award from the DCEO, and contributions from individual supporters.

Situated one block south of Macomb’s historic district, the Museum offers free admission with a suggested donation, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. Its hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with additional evening and weekend events.

As renovations continue, the Museum remains a testament to the power of historic preservation to energize communities. By repurposing its building and revitalizing its exhibits, the institution honors its mission to nurture history while forging a vibrant future at the heart of Macomb’s business district.
