A Scoop of Sweet History at Hannam’s Dairy Dream

By: Hannah Chatterton

Nestled in the heart of Canton, Hannam's Dairy Dream is more than an ordinary ice cream parlor; it’s a cherished local institution brimming with history and sweet treats that have delighted generations. The story of Hannam's Dairy Dream began around July 4, 1949, when the Lindsey family first opened its doors. Situated at the same location it occupies today, the shop quickly became a local favorite.

The Dairy Dream changed hands when the Ellis family purchased it before finally being acquired by the Hannam family in 1975. Gary and Jan Hannam, the driving forces behind the current incarnation, renamed the business Hannam’s Dairy Dream, and transformed the shop into what it is today. Gary, a former coal miner, and Jan, a nurse, brought a unique perspective to the business. "It primarily served ice cream products and a few key food items. I designed a menu that was centered around ice cream as well as a full hot food menu," Gary recalls. Gary's parents, Phil and Millie Hannam, played a crucial role in the early days, contributing significantly to the work and success of Hannam’s until their retirement. The family aspect remains strong, as Gary and Jan’s son Brad, the third generation to run the ice cream parlor, now runs Hannam’s Dairy Dream. Brad has been involved with Hannam’s since he was a teenager and is proud to continue the delicious family business. Brad even expanded the business's reach with a food truck for a period of time, bringing their beloved treats to fairs and festivals. With Gary and Jan nearing retirement, Brad now runs Hannam’s and is poised to carry the family legacy forward.

Running a small business has its challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for Hannam's Dairy Dream. "We had to close our walk-in area to customers. We had to change the layout of the building to add another carryout window for service," Brad recalls. The pandemic also caused disruptions in the availability of food, paper products, and essential equipment. Despite these challenges, the Hannam family’s resilience shone through. "At the end of the day, your business's success all comes down to hard work and putting in the hours," Brad advises. He added, "we currently have a great staff who work well together to make Dairy Dream a huge success.”

A visit to Hannam's Dairy Dream is incomplete without sampling their signature Lemon ice cream, a unique creation that has been a customer favorite since Gary first whipped it up. Whether enjoyed solo or with a sprinkle of Crunch, it’s a must-try. The annual Quart Sale in the fall is a testament to its popularity, with customers stocking their freezers to last through the winter months when Hannam’s is closed.

Beyond the Lemon ice cream, the menu boasts a variety of treats including Banana Splits, parfaits, flavorburst cones, and candy bar shakes. On the savory side, their flat grill burgers, tenderloins, BBQ sandwiches, and chili dogs are equally beloved.

On a recent visit to Hannam’s Dairy Dream, its delightful charm was evident from the moment one approached the cheerful, retro-style building. The aroma of freshly grilled burgers and the sweet scent of ice cream wafted through the air, inviting everyone to the window. After a warm welcome from the friendly staff, the choice was made to indulge in one of their Turtle Sundaes. This delectable treat, layered with rich vanilla ice cream, gooey caramel, hot fudge, and sprinkled with pecans, perfectly encapsulated the essence of summer in every bite. The next trip will surely involve their famed lemon ice cream sprinkled with Oreos.

Open seasonally from February through September/October, Hannam's Dairy Dream is a summer haven, welcoming visitors daily from Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. With their 50th anniversary of ownership on the horizon next year, the Hannam family is excited to celebrate this milestone with their wonderful customers.

Hannam's Dairy Dream is a sweet symbol of tradition, community, and family values. As they prepare to celebrate half a century of delightful service, one thing is certain: Hannam's Dairy Dream will continue to be a cornerstone of Canton, spreading joy with every scoop.

Cool off this summer and indulge in the timeless treats that have made Hannam's Dairy Dream a beloved summer destination for nearly 50 years.
