Knox County Rallies for a Cure

Relay for Life is an international fundraising event organized by the American Cancer Society (ACS) that unites communities in the fight against cancer. Originating in 1985, the Relay for Life began when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran around a track for twenty-four hours in Tacoma, Washington, and raised around $27,000 to give to the ACS. His fundraising has since evolved into a global movement with more than four million participants in over twenty countries.

Relay for Life's mission is to bring communities together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and raise funds to improve the lives of people with cancer through research, advocacy, and patient support. Each event typically includes a Survivor Lap celebrating those who have won in the fight against cancer, a Caregiver Celebration to acknowledge and thank those who support cancer patients, a Luminaria Ceremony for a beautiful visual representation of remembering past loved ones, and a Fight Back Ceremony to encourage attendants to be proactive in the fight against cancer.

The fundraising and hard work of ACS members, Relay for Life participants, and countless volunteers have helped the ACS contribute over $400 million to cancer research grants. ACS also provides valuable information about understanding cancer and treatment, as well as referrals and various programs to ease their burdens, such as the Hope Lodge, which offers free lodging to patients and caregivers. ACS also works to influence public policy and increase access to quality care.

Relay For Life has been a beacon of hope and support in Knox County for nearly three decades, embodying the movement that began nationally in 1985. This year's Relay event on June 11th was another testament to the community's unwavering dedication to helping those in their community fight the battle against cancer. As of this year, Relay for Life of Knox County has already raised approximately $27,000 to give to the American Cancer Society and to help local fighters. Along with their Relay for Life event, they have utilized other creative fundraising efforts, including bake sales, golf outings, and even corn and grain donations from local farmers.

A significant highlight of this year's Relay for Life event was the involvement of youth organizations like the Galesburg High School (GHS) Student Council, which hosted a glow run fundraiser, and other volunteers from GHS, ROWVA High School, and Upward Bound. Michelle Hinkle, a two-time cancer survivor, also spoke to the crowd, adding humor and optimism to the day and giving a personal touch to why this work is so important.

Every penny raised is pivotal in supporting the American Cancer Society's mission. The funds go towards providing essential services like educational resources, free rides to treatment, and accessible housing accommodations at Hope Lodge for patients undergoing long-term treatment. Relay For Life continues to make a profound impact, fostering a community of support and driving forward the fight against cancer.
