New Director's Vision: Orpheum Theatre's Summer FUN-raiser Series Aims to Reinvigorate Galesburg Arts

In an effort to invigorate Galesburg's cultural landscape, the Galesburg Orpheum has unveiled its ambitious "Summer FUN-raiser Series," a lineup designed not only to entertain but also to secure vital funding for future programming. Spearheaded by newly appointed Executive Director Andrew Driscoll, the series aims to address immediate challenges faced by the historic theater, emphasizing the need for sustained community involvement and financial support.

"When I started the role of Executive Director at the end of May, I saw a couple of immediate challenges," Driscoll shared candidly. "We were severely lacking in live entertainment during July and August, and we did not have funds set aside to book acts."

In a recent episode of Galesburg's Morning News, Driscoll addressed the issue of low attendance at the Orpheum. "The way that we change it is by bringing in shows, bringing in programming that is gonna suit their specific interest. I think maybe we lost some of them because we weren't booking shows for them."

To remedy this, Driscoll conceived the Summer FUN-raiser Series, strategically scheduling performances like the Central Illinois Dueling Pianos and Greg Batton's "Life. In Boxes." These events are not only set to entertain but also to demonstrate Driscoll's commitment to the Orpheum's revitalization. "I am donating what would normally be my profit to The Orpheum as part of this series," he affirmed, underscoring his personal investment in the venue's future.

The series kicked off on July 20th with the Central Illinois Dueling Pianos show, an evening of interactive musical comedy that has captivated audiences nationwide since 2004. This laugh-a-long, sing-a-long event invites attendees to participate in a lively, request-driven performance, all while supporting the Orpheum's mission to enhance local cultural offerings.

"We set a goal of raising $20,000 through these two shows," Driscoll explained optimistically. "This funding will enable us to book four comedy shows, two musical acts, a world premiere performance from a national dance company, and a novelty symphonic event, shaping our programming through April 2025."

The Orpheum's commitment to community engagement is further exemplified by the series' innovative fundraising approach. Instead of traditional admission fees, attendees are encouraged to contribute a minimum donation of $25 per person, underscoring the community's role in supporting the theater's future.

"This series is not just about entertainment; it's about influencing the direction of our programming," Driscoll emphasized. "The more support we receive, the greater our ability to enrich Galesburg's cultural fabric."

Supported by sponsors like Dave's Auto Body and The Waterhouse, the Summer FUN-raiser Series promises to be a highlight of Galesburg's summer calendar. It will offer residents and visitors alike an opportunity to enjoy exceptional entertainment while contributing to the preservation and expansion of the Orpheum's artistic offerings.
