Wyatt Earp Birthplace Gets a Fresh Start Thanks to Local Entrepreneur

Amid the streets of Monmouth, a significant piece of Old West history is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Jason Robbins, a local entrepreneur with a passion for historical preservation, is leading the restoration of the birthplace of Wyatt Earp, the legendary lawman whose name is synonymous with frontier justice.

Constructed in 1841, the Wyatt Earp Birthplace has long been a focal point of Monmouth's historical identity. Born on March 19, 1848, Earp's early life in this modest home marked the beginnings of a storied career that would make him a central figure in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The house, once a museum attracting thousands of visitors from around the globe, had fallen into disrepair over the years.

Robbins, who first noticed the deteriorating state of the property in early 2022, reached out to the previous owners, Bob and Melba Matson. "I was driving by this property, noticed it was in poor condition, even looked like it might need to be torn down. I reached out to who owned it. She was thrilled that somebody else was interested" Robbins recalled. Enthusiastic about revitalizing the historic site, Robbins acquired the property and has since embarked on an ambitious restoration project.

The renovation work has been extensive. Robbins has repaired significant structural damage, including a collapsed roof, and restored the original wooden shingles. Inside, the focus has been on preserving as much of the original material as possible—wood trim, plaster, and floors are being meticulously restored. "Our goal is that you would walk into this home and feel like you are back into the 1800s, but with items that work well for us today." Robbins explained.

Robbins' vision extends beyond mere restoration. He plans to turn the house into a short-term rental, allowing guests to stay in Wyatt Earp's birthplace and experience a slice of history firsthand. Robbins wants visitors to feel connected to the past while enjoying contemporary comforts. His long-term plans also include developing a Tombstone Town replica on a nearby city-owned lot, a project recently approved by the Monmouth City Council. This addition will offer guests an immersive Old West experience, further enhancing the historic ambiance of the site.

The Wyatt Earp Birthplace, located at 406 South 3rd Street in Monmouth, has officially opened as an Airbnb and is available for the public enjoyment!

Robbins' efforts reflect a broader commitment to preserving and celebrating regional heritage, positioning Monmouth as a destination for those interested in the true stories behind an American legend.
