Knox County Acquires Former Wells Fargo Branch in Major Courthouse Expansion Effort

By: Forgottonia Times™ Report

The Knox County Board has finalized the purchase of the former Wells Fargo Bank building located at 50 E Main St. in downtown Galesburg. This acquisition marks a significant step in the county's long-term plan to improve space utilization and enhance customer service at the Knox County Courthouse. The board approved the transaction with plans to relocate the offices of the County Clerk and Recorder, County Treasurer, and County Assessor to the newly acquired building.

The decision to buy the property follows months of consideration and was officially announced last Friday. While the exact sale price remains undisclosed, the property was initially listed for $850,000. The county aims to complete planning and design work soon, targeting a move-in early next year.

Wells Fargo closed its downtown Galesburg branch in 2019, claiming the closure was part of a broader strategy to streamline its operations amid declining foot traffic and increased digital banking trends.
