Canton native Brent Wheeler will become the Canton Park District's sixth executive director on September 9th, succeeding Jon Johnson, who retired on June 28th after 18 years in the role.

Wheeler, a 1993 Canton High School graduate, holds a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Sciences from Illinois State University and a Master's in Recreation, Sports, and Tourism from the University of Illinois. He has worked with the Peoria Park District since 2001, most recently as Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation. Wheeler has also served as a Canton Park Board Commissioner from 2011 to 2021 and has been an active local volunteer and youth sports coach.

Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Wheeler emphasized his commitment to enhancing Canton's park system, which he described as a significant part of his life and community. He also thanked Interim Director Kathy Walljasper for her work in making the transition as smooth as possible.

The Canton Park District, established in 1923, spans over 1,400 acres and is one of the area's most cherished assets. Having lived in the area for most of his life, Wheeler is deeply committed to preserving and enhancing the district's legacy and natural beauty.
