Gavin Gerard, a Carl Sandburg College student, won the bronze medal in masonry at the SkillsUSA Championships held in Atlanta. This remarkable achievement made Gerard the first student in the school's history to secure a national medal in this prestigious competition.

The SkillsUSA Championships, a cornerstone event for workforce development, saw over 6,000 students from across the country compete in various trade, technical, and leadership fields. Gerard's path to the podium involved a rigorous written exam followed by a six-hour practical task where Gerard constructed a composite brick-and-block project to industry standards.

Gerard, a resident of Oneida, is no stranger to the national stage, having competed in the job interview category last year. His dedication and skill have not only brought him personal accolades but have also highlighted the quality of education and training provided by Carl Sandburg College. He was part of a team of five state champions from Sandburg, including Faith Kiprop in technical computer applications, Brian Kipchemis in medical math, Ascar Jepchirchir in medical terminology, and Sullivan Ross in welding sculpture, all of whom showcased their talents at the national level.

The college community, alongside Gerard's family and friends, celebrated his success, recognizing the hard work and commitment required to excel in such a competitive environment. This victory underscores the importance of vocational training and its impact on students' future careers.

Looking ahead, Gerard’s achievement is expected to inspire more students to pursue excellence in trade skills and participate in SkillsUSA competitions. Carl Sandburg continues supporting and nurturing young talents, contributing to the local workforce's strength and expertise.
